OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
1. Identify and define Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome, Sepsis without Organ Dysfunction, Sepsis with Organ Dysfunction, Septic Shock, SEP-1, and SEP-3. 
2. Explain Sepsis as an Immunologic Phenomenon, and why early intervention is so critical to patient-centered outcomes and why lack of early intervention poses not only mortality risk, but long-term ramifications for those who survive. 
3. Review how to identify and intervene early in Sepsis, and the role CMS and SEP-1 plays in evaluating hospital Sepsis performance.
