2025 Neonatal and Infant FEES Course: A Multidisciplinary Approach

An intermediate-level course for the creation and implementation of a multidisciplinary neonatal and infant fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) program. This is not an advanced FEES course. This course will also include an overview of neonatal therapy practice.

Participants will receive two days of didactic education, infant FEES video interpretation, and an opportunity for interactive role play to perform a bottle and breastfeeding FEES procedure with an infant simulation doll and FEES equipment. The preconference offering will include hands on training in passing and handling the endoscope safely and effectively. The participants in the preconference will be performing endoscopy on each other.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe at least two anatomical and physiological abnormalities viewed endoscopically that contribute to infant dysphagia.
  • Distinguish at least two clinical indications for neonatal VFSS and FEES.
  • Identify the appropriate sequence for neonatal and infant bottle feeding and breastfeeding during FEES.
  • Identify two abnormal swallowing parameters observed during neonatal and infant FEES.
  • Identify at least three key components necessary to implement a multidisciplinary neonatal and infant FEES program.
  • Recognize the impact of at least two feeding problems on the infant/parent dyad.

Jenny Reynolds, MS, CCC-SLP, BCS-S, CLC, CNT
Jenny Reynolds is an advanced clinical specialist in the Level IV NICU at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. Jenny is a board-certified swallowing specialist, certified lactation counselor and certified neonatal therapist, as well as an adjunct lecturer for multiple graduate school programs in communication sciences and disorders. Her research areas are pediatric feeding and swallowing, including infant FEES. There are no financial or non-financial disclosures.

Kristin Taylor, M/OT, CLC, CNT, NTMTC
Kristin Taylor is a certified neonatal therapist and advanced clinical therapist in the Level III NICU at Baylor All Saints Medical Center - Fort Worth since 2006. She is a member of the National Association of Neonatal Therapists and a certified lactation counselor. Kristin and her colleagues have developed and implemented a FEES program in their NICU. Brittany Rush, CCC-SLP, CNT
Brittany Rush is an ASHA certified speech language pathologist specializing in evaluation and treatment of feeding and swallowing disorders. She is also a certified neonatal therapist. She currently serves as a clinical specialist for the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation department at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. Caren Michel, OT, CNT
Caren Michel is a certified neonatal therapist and an advanced clinical therapist at the Level III NICU of Baylor University Medical Center. With over 30 years of experience as an Occupational Therapist, she is also a proud member of the National Association of Neonatal Therapists.

Romaine Johnson, MD, MPH, FAGS, Pediatric Otolaryngologist
Dr. Johnson is an associate professor of otolaryngology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He serves as director of the Children's Health Airway Management Program and directs the pediatric otolaryngology fellowship at Children's Medical Center Dallas. His clinical interests include all aspects of the pediatric airway and childhood feeding disorders. There are no financial or non-financial disclosures.

Mustafa Suterwala, MD, Pediatric Hospitalist
Dr. Suterwala is a pediatric subspecialist, practicing neonatal and prenatal medicine for more than 25 years. He is currently employed by MEDNAX, a large medical group of neonatal, maternal-fetal, and pediatric physicians. He works at Baylor University Medical Center and sees NICU graduates and medically complex children in the hospital's outpatient TOTS Clinic. There are no financial or non-financial disclosures.

ASHA Credit: This conference is offered for up to 2.45 ASHA CEOs (Intermediate Level, Professional Area). To be eligible for CE credit, signing in and out on the roster each day is required. Partial credit is available and will be calculated based on sign-in and sign-out for each day of the course.

AOTA Credit: Select Medical Specialty Hospital Divisions an AOTA Approved Provider of professional development. Course approval ID# TBD. This live course is offered at 2.025 CEOs or 20.25 contact hours, Intermediate level, Occupational Therapy Service Delivery, and Foundational Knowledge. Assignment of AOTA CEOs does not imply endorsement of specific course content, products, or clinical procedures by AOTA or indicate AOTA approval of a certification or other professional recognition

 

To be eligible for CE credit, signing in and out on the roster each day is required. OT participants will also need to pass a post-quiz over the content. Partial credit is available and will be calculated based on sign-in and sign-out for each day of the course, and OT must also pass post-quiz (80%).

Certificates: Certificates will be distributed via email following the program, provided all information is completed.
