Description: Physicians have faced increased levels of stress and burnout.  The Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim hike provides a unique opportunity for participants to challenge themselves physically, mentally, and connect with one another outdoors and away from work. Participants train for months to physically prepare for the demands of the hike. 

As a result of participating in this event, learners will commit to apply strategies of self-care, building psychological capital, refining professional goals and improve their awareness of signs and symptoms of second victim, moral distress, compassion fatigue, burnout, and mental health distress/crisis which may threaten the safety of healthcare providers as well as the patients they serve.

Learning Objectives

Upon Completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

SESSION 1:  

  • Identify personal factors associated with improved professional satisfaction (team building, servant leadership, working with purpose and play)
  • Identify ways to Implement skills to mitigate burnout (routines and habits, time management)​

SESSION 2:  

  • Identify strengths, resources and metrics that are consistent with your goals.
  • Identify opportunities for mental health, personal growth and professional improvement.

SESSON 3:  ​​​​​​

  • Describe the 9 Enneagram types and Identify participant enneagram.
  • Assess how personal enneagram data impact interactions with individuals from other enneagram types.

SESSION 4:  

  •  Describe how exercising gratitude can improve personal wellbeing.
  •  Identify ways to apply exercising gratitude in personal daily practice amongst healthcare teams to improve team dynamics.  

SESSION 5:  

  • Identify summative actionable items that will help you achieve personal set goals.
  • Report back personal/professional achievements at a future date to be determined

  • Chris Wagner, MD- Session 1- 1hr CME- Pre trip training.
    • Description: Physicians have faced increased levels of stress and burnout.  The Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim hike provides a unique opportunity for participants to challenge themselves physically, mentally, and connect with one another outdoors and away from work. Participants train for months to physically prepare for the demands of the hike.  They will be provided a list of resources that currently exist on BSWH Wellbeing website. This list includes podcasts and YouTube presentations for participants to enjoy and reflect upon during training.  Topics will cover wellness, burnout, EI, leadership, and professional development.  At the pretrip meeting, participants will be guided in a group facilitation to discuss reflections to address the assigned objectives gained from the resources experienced during training. Participants will be introduced the concept of "Forest Bathing,” and instruct the group on the format for the other sessions. 
    • Objectives:            
      • Identify personal factors associated with improved professional satisfaction (team building, servant leadership, working with purpose and play)
      • Identify ways to Implement skills to mitigate burnout (routines and habits, time management)
    • Activity 1: While participating in an individualized training program, participants will cover the list of provided wellness resources and collect reflections.
    • Activity 2: Willing participants will share collected reflections and objective outcomes through small group facilitation at pretrip meeting.
      • Participants will attest to completing at least one hour of session activity and identify changes upon claiming CME. Small group participation will be collected by facilitator.

 

  • Will Phillips, MD- Session 2-   1hr CME- Self assessment and pretest
    • Description- Before the trip/on the flight or during car ride to the event, participants will take the Maslach Burnout Inventory and score themselves to build a foundation to reflect upon results. Participants will celebrate results that are consistent with their goals and identify areas they may want to change. Hikers will have an opportunity to discuss their answers and results on the drive between the Phoenix airport and the South Rim
    • Objectives:
      • Identify strengths, resources and metrics that are consistent with your goals.
      • Identify opportunities for mental health, personal growth and professional improvement.
    • Activity 1: Reflect and identify your identified top three strengths that are consistent with your personal goals.  Commit to at least one area of self improvement.
    • Activity 2: Through small group facilitation, participants are encouraged to journal, record on audio/video or perhaps share findings with fellow participants at breakpoints along the hike.
      • Participants will attest to completing at least one hour of session activity and identify changes upon claiming CME

 

  • Richard Goad, DPM- Session 3. - 1 hr CME- Enneagram personality profile.
    • We have been subjected to many personality profiles.  Some are spot on; some are not reflective of who we are.  The purpose of any inventory is to validate if it is a true reflection of yourself, and to use it to predict how you will respond in the various scenarios you find yourself in daily in interpersonal interactions. Using the free enneagram tool found at enneagramuniverse.com, participants will identify their enneagram personality profiles, evaluate interactions and share reflections.
       
    • Objectives: At the end of this session participants will be able to…
      • 1.  Describe the 9 Enneagram types and Identify participant enneagram.
      • 2.  Assess how personal enneagram data impact interactions with individuals from other enneagram types.
    • Activity #1: Before the trip/on the flight or during car ride to the event, complete the enneagram short (2 questions) and long tests (144 questions) to identify Participants enneagram.
    • Activity #2: Discuss reflections that arise from exercise with other participants in small group facilitation at breakpoints along the hike.
      • Participants will attest to completing at least one hour of session activity and identify changes upon claiming CME

 

  • Scott Wieters, MD - Session 4- 1 hr CME- Gratitude, Appreciation and Joy
    • Description: Participants will listen to ~ 10 min podcast/read transcript on gratitude while hiking. At the end reflection, questions will be presented to self reflect and share with others if willing: 
    • Objectives: At the end of this session participants will be able to…
      • 1.       Describe how exercising gratitude can improve personal wellbeing.
      • 2.       Identify ways to apply exercising gratitude in personal daily practice amongst healthcare teams to improve team dynamics.  
    • Activity 1:  Reflection questions:  What are some things you most grateful for?  Who are the recipients of your gratitude?  Why are you grateful for this person?  Write a thank you note on a postcard and mail it from the bottom of the GC. And/or record audio or video of your answers.  Consider sharing this gratitude in a thank you card or message upon return. Or sharing your audio or video file with this person. 
    • Activity 2: Small group facilitator:   at a time in the hike plan a ~5 min conversation over the topic of gratitude and offer those willing to share in reflections.  It may end at 5 min or organically extend.
      • Participants will attest to completing at least one hour of session activity and identify changes upon claiming CME

 

 

  • Danny Little, MD - Session- 5 – 1 hr CME- Bringing it all together “Out of the Canyon back into the hospital?”
    • Description- Summarize the experience similar to when you brought us all together at the end of our hike the next morning. Share your summary of the event, highlight moments and lead discussion of others that feel led to share. Direct participants to the post test to assess outcomes.
    • Objectives:
      • Identify summative actionable items that will help you achieve personal set goals.
    • Activity- In our closing session, participants will identify summative actionable items “take home points.”  Participants who feel comfortable, will share with the group led by small group facilitation. 
      • Participants will attest to completing at least one hour of session activity and identify changes upon claiming CME. 
      • Small group attendance will be collected by facilitator.

Location: Grand Canyon National Park. - Being in nature will distance the learner cohort from the stimuli of clinical/academic practice into a remote environment with ample opportunity for self reflection and small group discussion.  Participants benefit from the healing effect of a natural environment (forest bathing) and offered the opportunity for direct engagement through participant appropriate physical activities.
