OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

1)  Identify various clinical scenarios that create tension between the recommendations of the Surgical Treatment team and what is, or is not, accepted on the part of the patient.
2)  Assess the salient features that define patient capacity and when the incapacitated patient can, and cannot, refuse interventions.
3)  Discuss potential ways to alleviate the degree of moral angst that can come along with rejection, or non-compliance with, recommendations on the part of the Surgical team.
