OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to: (1) Discuss what varices are and how esophageal varies form in the setting of portal hypertension and why cirrhosis is the most common cause of esophageal varices formation. (2) Discuss preventative medical therapy in patients with clinically significant portal hypertension and discuss initial medical management of patients with esophageal variceal bleeding/hemorrhage. (3) Discuss procedural interventions to control variceal bleeding as well as screening guidelines with regard to esophageal varices.
