OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to: (1) Recognize the components of workplace bullying (lateral violence) among US healthcare workers; (2) Describe the historical trends in studies of lateral workplace violence in nursing since 2000 and its level of visibility in the US workplace; (3) Explain levels of escalation action found effective in addressing individual cases of workplace bullying; (4) Describe active initiatives at national organizations (TJC, ANA) associated with lateral violence in the workplace; (5) Describe rationalization behaviors often demonstrated precipitators of workplace bullying.
