OBJECTIVES:  As a result of this activity, the participant should be able to: 

  1. Describe the different types of respiratory failure
  2. Identify the physiological derangements leading to respiratory failure
  3. Review some common clinical case scenarios and discuss mechanisms of respiratory failure in those circumstances
