OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
1. Recognize the interplay between post-traumatic stress and resilience, and the need to screen for both in first responders. Identification of high-stress/low-resilience individuals may be key to mitigating risk of death by suicide.
2. Identify how pre-, peri-, and post-event factors can amplify post-traumatic stress responses in patients and trauma providers and how resiliency training can help temper these effects.
3. Discuss how partnering with local trauma and emergency medicine communities can augment agency resources to screen first responders and provide resiliency training and critical incident debriefing.
