National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and Vermont Oxford data in Neonatal-perinatal medicine suggest significant continuing morbidity and mortality of very low birth weight infants. Some of the common and challenging risk factors are nutrition, respiratory management, neuro developmental outcomes etc. Additionally, providing education in the neonatal- perinatal medicine is essential for patient care as well.
OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
1) Review the clinical and laboratory evidence for a placental transfusion at birth.
2) Review the different approaches for providing a placental transfusion.
3) Explain the rationale for resuscitation with an intact cord.
