OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to: (1) Review the pathogenesis and clinical manifestations of acute myeloid leukemia, (2) Review the diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia, (3) Review the management of potential complications or oncologic emergencies associated with AML, including leukostasis, tumor lysis syndrome, and bleeding/coagulation abnormalities (severe thrombocytopenia, disseminated intravascular coagulation, (4) Discuss treatment options for induction therapy for medically fit and medically frail patients with AML.
