OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  1. Explain how early life events are absolutely crucial for lifelong lung health 
  2. Analyze the evidence that early wheeze is not the seed for future long term adverse effects but a manifestation of the underlying soil which is the root cause of long term adverse effects
  3. Review new data which shows how early childhood disadvantage not merely leads to wheeze, but worsens the effects of at least some later adverse adult life events
  4. Identify that there is more to early impairment of spirometry than childhood current wheeze and later lung disease, and start at least to consider the question, ‘when should we measure FEV1, and what should we do about it if it is low?’
