OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:  (1) Review the background of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in HIV- positive recipients, (2) Discuss the manager of HIV with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and associated drug-drug interactions with immunosuppressive agents, (3) Explain the introduction, maintenance immunosuppression strategies, and opportunistic infection prophylaxis in HIV- positive kidney transplant (KT) recipients, (4) Describe patient and graft outcomes of KT in HIV- positive recipients.
