New medical knowledge and technology are advancing more quickly than most physicians can keep up with and utilize wisely. This series of lectures allow physicians to improve techniques involved in the diagnosis and management of disease often seen by Internal Medicine physicians.
OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
1. Exclude an EGID in patients who present with chronic unexplained early satiety, postprandial fullness, bloating and/or diarrhea.
2. Obtain four duodenal biopsies to search for duodenal eosinophilia (eosinophilic duodenitis) in functional dyspepsia and ask your pathologist to count the eosinophils.
3. Prescribe a proton pump inhibitor in standard dose as first line therapy for your patient with functional dyspepsia, with or without IBS. Remember that any benefit may be because of an anti-eosinophil action and alternative options (e.g., diet to eliminate trigger foods) may be worth considering.
