OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
Objective 1) Recognize limitations in the evaluation of kidney function with creatinine-based estimates of GFR among patients with cirrhosis
Objective 2) Review alternative biomarkers with the potential to more accurately evaluate kidney function in patients with decompensated cirrhosis
Objective 3) Discuss cystatin C as a viable means to estimate GFR in patients with cirrhosis who are disadvantaged by creatine-based estimates of GFR and risk stratification including the MELD score
