OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to: 

  1. Describe how antibiotic overuse impacts patient outcomes globally and locally
  2. List 3 positive outcomes associated with antimicrobial stewardship interventions (decreased antibiotic resistance, fewer drug ADRs, fewer C. diff cases)
  3. Discuss opportunities for and the impact of diagnostic stewardship (UTIs, C.diff, BSIs (need for repeat blood cx in gram negative infections? need to "wait for repeats" in CoNS bacteremia, MRSA PCR)
  4. Review the evidence for shortened durations of therapy for various disease states
  5. Identify opportunities to safely de-escalate antimicrobial therapy
