1. Explain that respiratory failure occurs when ventilatory muscle power and/or central respiratory drive are inadequate to overcome the respiratory load.
2. Identify children who are good candidates for home mechanical ventilation.
3. Review causes of death for children on home mechanical ventilation, and what types of parent education may reduce this risk.
