OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:  (1) Review the history of the development of bioartificial liver support. (2) Analyze why previous devices have failed in clinical trials. (3) Describe new attempts to learn from past mistakes to develop an improved bioartificial liver device.
