OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to: (1) Outline an acute brain injury map with basic definitions of coma, locked-in syndrome, brain death, vegetative state, and minimally conscious state suitable for use with lay persons, (2) Communicate effectively about these conditions, (3)  Recognize the bedside clinical testing (including use of a pupilometer) and ancillary testing priorities for determining brain death, (4) Follow the requirements of BSWH Determination of Brain Death Policy.
