OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to: (1) Apply the VTE (venous thromboembolism) “Recurrence Triangle” concept in individual patient care to determine how long to treat a patient with VTE with anticoagulation, in which consideration of thrombophilia testing might be reasonable, and how the finding of a thrombophilia might influence that decision-making (2) Explain what leads to false positive and false negative thrombophilia test results, (3) Discuss Dr. Moll’s four “Choosing Wisely” teaching points about when NOT to test for thrombophilia, (4) Discuss which patient with stroke or other arterial thromboembolism to consider for thrombophilia testing, (5)  Identify which woman with pregnancy complications (early or late pregnancy loss, eclampsia, IUGR) or infertility to test (and which ones NOT to test) for thrombophilia, and how to manage a patient with a detected thrombophilia.
