The field of Anesthesia is rapidly changing with new and innovative diagnosis and treatment protocols. Anesthesia physicians who are using older protocols for management of psychiatric-related diseases and disorders are not able to provide optimal patient care.

OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

1. Describe historical events leading to perioperative fasting.

2. Recall physiology of digestion and pulmonary aspiration.

3. Synthesize an optimal approach to perioperative nutrition by applying existing literature on outcomes related to fasting.
