OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
1. Identify the importance of recognizing and treating insulin resistance in treatment-resistant bipolar depression.
2. Review the results of a 26-week proof-of-concept study that utilized metformin as an insulin sensitizer to convert a substantial percentage of treatment-resistant bipolar depression patients to experience improved clinical outcomes.
3. Review potential mechanisms underlying treatment-resistant bipolar depression associated with insulin resistance.
4. Discuss the measurement of insulin resistance and the clinical predictive models to predict IR reversal with metformin inpatients with treatment-resistant depression.
