OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:  (1) Discuss the state of literature for medical intervention of acute spinal cord injury (Bracken et al., 1997), (2) Compare the efficacy of methylprednisolone administered for various time intervals or tirilazad mesylate administered for 48 hours in patients with acute spinal cord injury (Bracken et al., 1997), (3) Analyze the influence of this literature on the state of SCI care and how it may influence care in the future (Bracken et al., 1997), (4) Review the association between pain-related fear and poor behavioral performance (Crombez et al., 1999), (5) Investigate whether pain-related fear measures are better predictors of disability and behavioral performance than measures of general negative affect or general negative pain beliefs (e.g. pain catastrophizing) (Crombez et al., 1999), and (6) Investigate whether pain-related fear is more disabling than pain itself (Crombez et al., 1999).
