OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to: (1) Have more nuanced awareness of ethical, religious, and constitutional ideas on treatment alternatives at the end of life. (2) Recognize the classic goals of Medicine dating to Hippocrates and explore the relevance of Hippocratic goals and the Hippocratic Oath to modern serious illness care near the end of life. (3) Recognize and explain to patients, families, and colleagues the multiple alternatives for treatment near the end of life.
