OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

1. Review the history of psychopharmacology highlighting the role of clinical intuition, serendipity, and hypothesis driven discovery.
2. Discuss the basic principles of psychopharmacology, including the nature of the synapse, neurotransmitters, receptors and signal transduction.
3. Discuss pharmacological treatments in psychiatric disorders in the context of the basic principles of receptor pharmacology, as previously discussed.
