OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to: (1) Review a brief history of angiogenesis and appreciate the numerous accomplishments of Dr. Judah Folkman, the "Father of Angiogenesis". (2) Discuss and describe the prominent studies of angiogenesis and angiogenic markers in pregnancy and preeclampsia. (3) Begin an understanding and appreciation of RNA Inference, following the research of Andrew Fire and Craig Mello, their award of the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine, and the resultant potential therapeutic implications of gene suppression. (4) Recognize the importance of a 1mm nematode roundworm, C. elegans, associated with the profound discovery of RNA Inference.
