OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
1.  Review and define the hypopharynx's anatomic boundaries, subsites, and neurovascular supply, and relate these to patterns of spread and nodal risk, and explain the hypopharynx's role in swallowing and airway protection and apply this information to anticipate dysphagia/aspiration risk.
2.  Describe definitive treatment strategies (surgery and/or adjuvant therapy versus chemoradiation, with selected use of induction or neoadjuvant systemic therapy) and select an approach based on stage, subsite, and patient factors.
3.  Explain treatment-related complications (airway, swallowing/voice, fistula, carotid blowout) and coordinate multidisciplinary supportive care (nutrition, dental, speech/swallow, survivorship.)
