OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:  (1) Assess the symptoms, pathophysiology, and diagnostic strategies for irritable bowel syndrome, as well as distinguishing IBS-C from IBS-D, (2) Review the current clinical trial data and practical applications of available therapeutic options to manage patients with IBS, (3) Evaluate long-term pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic strategies to manage symptoms and quality of life in patients with IBS.
