Overview:
Providers need to understand the documentation that is required for specific code assignment so that the medical diagnosis codes are an accurate reflection of their patient’s diabetic condition, severity, complications/manifestations, and treatment.
CDC reports that DM is actually under diagnosed.
We also need to teach providers on the proper times to add the diagnosis of diabetes, such as only when the patient meets criteria for the diagnosis of diabetes and not to misuse the diagnosis on labs or screening tests when the patient has not met the diagnosis criteria.
