Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Evaluate the pharmacology of sedatives-hypnotics to foster patient centered decision making for addressing use/misuse of benzodiazepines
  • Evaluate effectiveness of urine drug testing/screening of benzodiazepines 
  • Review DSM-5 Diagnostic criteria for Sedative, Hypnotic, or Anxiolytic Intoxication, Withdrawal, and Use Disorders
  • Diagnose and manage medical complications related to sedatives and hypnotics.
  • Apply discussed management techniques for Sedative, Hypnotic, or Anxiolytic Intoxication, Withdrawal, and Use Disorders
  • Assess non-sedative pharmacological options for treating anxiety/ insomnia and apply when appropriate
