OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
1. Review the responsibilities and duties under EMTALA for an on-call physician, emergency room physician and hospital.
2. Describe the performance of medical screening exam, determining an emergency medical condition and stabilization requirements.
3. Compare the responsibilities of a transferring hospital and an accepting hospital.
4. Discuss the reporting requirements.
5. Explain EMTALA regulations and effectively teach and educate fellows, residents, and medical students on the principles and compliance issues related to EMTALA.
