Presentation Summary:

This presentation aims to provide an overview of motivational interviewing (MI) which is a highly specific collaborative communication approach addressing patient ambivalence for changing health behaviors. Background on the efficacy of MI for different populations and relevant evidence supporting its utility in the health care system will be provided. Specific approaches and strategies to change health behaviors will be presented. Recommendations for training and implementation of expanded roles for delivery of MI in the hospital system will also be discussed.

Objectives:

1.Provide overview of the evidence base for use of MI in health care settings across a number of different patient groups and health behaviors.
2.Describe elements of communication styles involved in MI and ways that providers can implement these strategies to elicit, recognize, and sustain change talk.
3.Review how the recommended strategies can be applied to expand training of medical staff to utilize MI in direct patient care to enhance treatment outcomes.
