Video 5: Serious Brain Injuries Terminology, Communication and Prognosis
Serious brain injuries are often poorly understood by non-neurologist physicians and the broader public alike. All physicians, nurses, and others working with seriously ill patients must have a strong working understanding of serious brain injuries.
Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
- Outline an acute brain injury map for lay persons
- Medically define the concepts of coma, brain death, the vegetative state, the minimally conscious state, and the locked-in syndrome
- Explain to lay persons these same concepts
- Recognize the potential for suffering in different sorts of brain injuries
