20260227 Quality Alliance Lunch and Learn: Diabetic Kidney Disease

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) affects more than 450 million Americans, and the most common cause of CKD in the U.S. is Diabetic Kidney Disease (DKD).
By improving early detection of DKD, this will allow early intervention, and thus improved outcomes. Interventions are defined as routine screening for the presence of DKD, appropriate medical management based on new evidence and referral to nephrology when appropriate.

This lecture will address:

  1. Review of the different types of DKD.
  2. The screening process and how to appropriately diagnose.
  3. Timing and indications needed for referral to nephrology.
  4. Awareness of treatment options as recommended by the newest guidelines.

Target Audience

Physicians, Advanced Practice Providers, Nurses, and Pharmacists.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Identify renal function measures and markers of DKD, and use early screening tools such as KFRE for risk assessment.
  • Describe key clinical complications of DKD and apply appropriate laboratory interpretation and nephrology referral criteria.
  • Implement current DKD management strategies, including guideline‑directed therapy and accurate documentation for HCC coding.
  • Support informed patient decision‑making by reviewing treatment options, considerations for older adults, and preparation for dialysis or conservative care.
