
2025 14th Biennial Baylor Scott and White Bereavement Conference: Dealing with Difficult Grief
Concept
Increased societal awareness of the needs of the dying and bereaved requires helpers to utilize up-to-date theoretical principles and innovative treatment techniques to help patients/families prepare for the end of life, navigate events surrounding death, manage acute grief, and adjust after bereavement.
Target Audience
This educational activity is designed for professionals and lay persons involved in the care of the dying and bereaved, including physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, counselors, chaplains/clergy, hospice workers, allied health professionals, funeral directors, and volunteers.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, the attendee should be able to:
- Examine beliefs and perspectives related to the experience of homicide for Black communities
- Explore the manifestation of the deprivation of grief and bereavement as a result of homicide for Black communities
- Present the process of identifying and engaging in coping strategies for Black survivors of homicide victims in the United States
- Provide culturally responsive approaches to practice related to the provision of grief and bereavement services for Black survivors of homicide victims
- Examine the historical, theological and medical perspectives depicted in biblical texts on suicide
- Explore emotional and psychological impact of suicide loss including shock/guilt and how the complexity sets it apart from other forms of bereavement.
- Recognize unique challenges in suicide loss to promote remembrance and healing for loved ones to honor the life of the deceased.
- Implement strategies for posttraumatic growth for the mourner.
- Differentiate between boundary violations and boundary crossings
- Identify the ways in which loss affects the therapeutic relationship
- Recognize the ethical ramifications of self-disclosure
- Define principles of self-multiplicity, information exchange, and transformation which underlie effective chair work.
- Describe a three-step process for therapeutic chair work based on psychodramatic techniques: warm-up, action, reflection.
- Discuss potential application of chair work with bereaved parents seeking to re-connect” with their deceased child.

Refunds (less $50 administrative fee) will be provided to registrants who cancel their registration two weeks prior to the course if cancellation by registrant becomes necessary. Refunds will be processed in the same form of payment as registration was received.
