Danny Little, MD - Session 1 - "Forest bathing"
- Description: Physicians have faced increased levels of stress and burnout. The Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim hike provides a unique opportunity for participants to challenge themselves physically, mentally, and connect with one another outdoors and away from work. Participants train for months to physically prepare for the demands of the hike. They will be provided a list of resources that currently exist on BSWH Wellbeing website. This list includes podcasts and YouTube presentations for participants to enjoy and reflect upon during training. Topics will cover wellness, burnout, EI, leadership, and professional development. At the pretrip meeting, participants will be guided in a group facilitation to discuss reflections to address the assigned objectives gained from the resources experienced during training. Participants will be introduced the concept of "Forest Bathing,” and instruct the group on the format for the other sessions.
- Objectives:
- Identify personal factors associated with improved professional satisfaction (team building, servant leadership, working with purpose and play)
- Identify ways to Implement skills to mitigate burnout (routines and habits, time management)
- Activity 1: While participating in an individualized training program, participants will cover the list of provided wellness resources and collect reflections.
- Activity 2: Willing participants will share collected reflections and objective outcomes through small group facilitation at pretrip meeting.
- Participants will attest to completing at least one hour of session activity and identify changes upon claiming CME. Small group participation will be collected by facilitator
Location: Grand Canyon National Park. - Being in nature will distance the learner cohort from the stimuli of clinical/academic practice into a remote environment with ample opportunity for self reflection and small group discussion. Participants benefit from the healing effect of a natural environment (forest bathing) and offered the opportunity for direct engagement through participant appropriate physical activities.
