Concept
Increased societal awareness of the needs of the dying and bereaved requires helpers to utilize up-to-date theoretical principles and innovative treatment techniques to help patients/families prepare for the end of life, navigate events surrounding death, manage acute grief, and adjust after bereavement.
Target Audience
This educational activity is designed for professionals and lay persons involved in the care of the dying and bereaved, including physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, counselors, chaplains/clergy, hospice workers, allied health professionals, funeral directors, and volunteers.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this lecture, the participant should be able to:
• Contrast private aspects of the grief experience with what happens when death occurs in public places
• Discuss rituals which connect interior grief responses with physical places where death or loss occurred
• Describe the notion of honoring place as in important aspect of grief adaption and recovery
• Analyze data derived from the Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model (CBEM) to better understand difference in prevalence rates of youth bereavement across regions and social contexts.
• Describe a research-based approach to addressing childhood bereavement with a continuum of preventive services that support the whole family and community.
• List current societal factors and disparities impacting grieving youth and families and identify personal action items for supporting equitable access to effective care.
• Explain how Hispanic and Latinx populations can become disenfranchised from traditional mental health services such as grief counseling and support groups
• Describe collective expressions of grief in the Hispanic and Latinx cultures, such as the traditional celebration of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)
• Discuss the role social media can play in promoting awareness of healthy grieving and provision of grief support through online programs and resources as an alternative.
• Explain the dynamic relationship between regret and hope and how personal goals and objectives can be clarified by exploring regrets.
• Compare and contrast the psychological variables of forgiveness and reconciliation, as applied to end-of-life care.
• Discuss the role of goodbye letters and “Hello, again…” letters in end-of-life care.
• Discuss how Feedback Informed Treatment tracks change and monitors the therapeutic alliance across sessions during grief counseling
• List three proven methods practiced by expert therapists in the field of bereavement intervention
• Describe one or more specific practice innovations which could be implemented in the participant’s own treatment setting
• List ten Milestones of Healing that can be supported in the care of bereaved children adolescents, adults and families
• Describe specific, developmentally appropriate interventions effective for helping young people cope with the interface of grief and trauma after a death.
• Identify personal strategies for self-care, asking for help and coping with vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue to sustain every for this vital work in bereavement.

Saturday, September 23rd breakout sessions will be held at Baylor Scott & White Health Mayborn Auditorium in Temple, TX. These sessions will not be live streamed.
Please choose Friday only registration if you do not wish to attend the workshops in Temple. You will receive an email closer to the event regarding location preference.
Cancellation and Refund Policy
Refunds (less $50 administrative fee) will be provided to registrants who cancel their registration two weeks prior to the course if cancellation by registrant becomes necessary. Refunds will be processed in the same form of payment as registration was received.

In the unlikely event that BSWH must cancel or postpone this course, the registration fee will be fully refunded.
