Abstract

We describe the case of a 19-year-old woman who presented with abdominal pain, vomiting, and a palpable purpuric rash. The patient subsequently developed dysentery and was found to have an infection from Shiga toxin–producing Escherichia coli.

Hypokalemia is a common electrolyte derangement seen in the inpatient setting, often with multiple plausible explanations.
